The process
Each project is different, but it is helpful to outline what each client should expect.
Brief
The first step is to meet the client to gain an understanding of what the garden will be used for now and in the future. Lucy will take into consideration the relationship the garden has with the property and the surrounding environment.
Lucy will then propose a fee before returning to the garden to take a detailed site analysis and for a further opportunity to understand the client’s views on different aspects of the garden, aesthetics, plants etc.
The written brief will be approved by the client before any design work begins.
If the garden is large, a site survey should be commissioned, and the client will be guided through this process.
Design Concept
The proposed design will be presented as a simple line drawn plan, brought to life with visuals or sketches. From this first design Lucy works with the client to develop and evolve the design.
Detailed Design
A Masterplan is presented. Ideas and proposals will have been discussed in advance of this presentation so the final Masterplan will be a summation of the design. The hand drawn Masterplan is detailed enough to act as a working document for the tender process as well as a template for contractors to use for building the garden.
Planting Design
Initial planting ideas are discussed during the Detailed Design stage, but to create a wonderful and appropriate planting scheme detailed planning is needed.
Scale, colour and form of plants, seasonality, soil type, irrigation and views are all considered to provide a beautiful scheme that will last.
Specifications and quantities are documented so plants can be sourced and quoted for. Lucy has relationships with trade nurseries so can help with sourcing the plants. She also advises on soil preparation and sets out the plants ready for planting.
Working with Contractors
Lucy recommends asking three contractors to quote for the project. Ideally she would like to be involved in the process to ensure continuity.
If the landscape contractor needs detailed drawings prior to construction work, Lucy can usually provide these drawings if requested.
